Ever wondered what a Sho is?
A sho is a traditional Japanese wind instrument that is used as a part of the court music ensemble called the Gagaku that dates back as far as 1,300 years ago.
During a music conference in Tokyo, I was privileged to be given a chance to attend a workshop on composing music using the sho. The workshop proved to be very interesting for someone like me who is not a born musician. The workshop was headed by Naoyuki Manabe, a Japanese sho player and composer. He had composed a series of works for a solo sho performance from 1994-2006. He also produced several sho recitals from 2000 to 2012.
To get a glimpse of how he plays the sho, here's a short video that I took during the workshop. Please enjoy and I hope you'll be inspired to learn more about this interesting Japanese musical instrument!
